in northern California.
This morning I woke up to site three spot fires on the ridge above the creek that wanders near my house. That really brought home to me how transient our individual human intentions can be. Fortunately, when I called the sighting in, they already had trucks and hand crews working up there. It is unlikely that those tiny fires will become anything threatening on this calm morning. However, Son’s truck is sprinkled lightly with fine grey ash. He just washed his truck last night, and it is a deep shiny black, so the ash shows—and makes a statement all of its own.
Here in Hoopa, as well as in most of the rest of Northern California, we live surrounded by wild fires. Whole towns and many other isolated individuals have already been evacuated. The Yurok and Hoopa reservations have been declared to be in States of Emergency because of hazardous air quality (as a result of the smoke), and the whole state of California has been declared a disaster area. While each of us may feel our own tribulations are the worst, they are only small pieces of a whole. We must not forget those that have endured hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones, monsoons, flooding, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and devastating drought. These times are fraught with deep difficulty. The outlook is sobering. Good morning, indeed.
I have insulated myself for the last few months, to focus on a little project that I will soon send out into the world to do its work. My new book is titled, Food Security and Sustainability, For the Times Ahead. The draft is complete and I am hard at work on the editing, with the assistance of a couple of very talented friends. I have also started a new publishing company, Bio Diverse Press; which is all set up and ready to spring into action. Look for my book to be released by November 1, of this year. It will be available on amazon.com and orderable by your local book store. I will also have autographed copies available, by snail mail, should anyone be interested.
This, of course, is my intention, fires and smoke provided. In regards to the fire and smoke, it looks like I am just riding this out, for now. If we get evacuated, and I find I am unable to work where ever they send us, I will be looking for alternatives. Hopefully, that is not a scenario in my future, but human intentions are so very transitory in the face of natural disaster, so we shall see. It is my sincere hope that each of you feel more settled than I. Unfortunately, some of you live in evacuation zones, so I know that your lives are even more disrupted than mine. I hope you can find peace in this turbulent time.
For those who are secure, or who are ready for a project in spite of it all, I am looking for some other titles to be published by Bio Diverse Press. Something as simple as a picture how-to on processing acorn, weaving a basket, making an arrow head, or growing your own salad in containers would be great. My focus is how-to, in regards to sustainable living, traditional skills, surviving climate change and the down fall of western civilization, as well as encouraging bio-diversity in the yard, garden, pasture, rangeland, forest, farm, etc. (A book on managing forests for bio-diversity and low fire hazard would be great.) I can produce paperback books of at least 130 pages, and full color picture books of 24 – 40 pages (or more). So, if you have an idea, and you have or know someone with related skills, and you or someone you know is a good writer, artist, or photographer—please run your idea past me. Food Security and Sustainability will be off to the printer in less than a month. The best place to announce up-coming projects will be in the back of my book. So if you have an idea and a way to get your share of the work done, please don’t waste any time letting me know. The idea needs to be focused on the mission—to get information out to the people on how to save the planet and how to survive these trying times.
I wish you all peace, comfort, and abundance!
